Volute
A carved whirl or twist that takes the form of a scroll as in the capital of Ionic columns. Also called a helix, this form is found in Baroque ornament, late Renaissance and Art Nouveau.

Volute
A spiral or twisted formation or object. In architecture this spiral ornament is found especially on the capitals of the Ionic, Corinthian, and composite orders.

Volute - Spiral, scrolling form. The basis for the Ionic order consoles or brackets are often based on a volute.
Voussoirs - Trapezoidal shaped blocks of an arch, laid in compression, culminating in the keystone.

Composite Order A Roman order; its capital combines the Corinthian acanthus leaf decoration with volutes from the Ionic Order.

The Ionic column is widely known for the pair of volutes (spiral looking horns, like those commonly seen on a ram) on either side of the capital.

Ionic columns have a capital with two spirals, called volutes, and relatively slender shafts.

The Rectangular Temple on the right is Ionic in style (capitals with characteristic volutes) and is built of tufa and travertine with a superficial coating of stucco( bonding material). It stands on a lofty podium in the Republican manner.

It refers to the land itself and to the buildings upon it. voluteVolute derives from the Latin voluta=scroll, and is is used for the scroll decoration in the classical Orders of European architecture.

Ionic Order -- A classical order characterized by a capital with spiral scrolls, called volutes.
Lattice -- An openwork grill of interlacing wood strips used as screening.
Lintel -- A horizontal beam or stone bridging an opening.

Ionic (second) Ionic columns are usually slender, with fluted shafts, and prominent volutes on the capital.

Ionic capital: A capital used originally by the Greeks in a system of supports called the Ionic order. An Ionic capital has a volute, or a spiral scroll-like carving, on each side as its major decoration.

Composite order. An order of Roman architecture characterized by a capital - much used in triumphal arches - consisting of acanthus leaves and large volutes. It is a combination of elements of both the Ionic and the Corinthian orders.

Composite Capital (order) - An order consisting of a hybrid of Corinthian and Ionic elements, normally with the acanthus motifs of the Corinthian order surmounted by Ionic volutes at the corners.

An Ionic capital has a volute, or a spiral scroll-like carving, on each side as its major decoration.

Though each order has its own conventions (3), there are many minor variations. The Composite capital combines Ionic volutes with Corinthian foliage.

The three types of columns normally seen on greek revival house plans are the Doric (which has plain capitals), the Ionic (which has scroll-like spiral called volutes), and the corinthian (which has decorative leaves).
