Wall Plate - A wall plate is a piece of timber placed horizontally upon a wall used for supporting posts, joists, and the like.

Wall plate
- a timber laid along the top of a wall, rafter ends and studs and posts from below may be joined to it.

wall plate: beam laid along the lateral wall tops to receive the feet of the rafters.
wall walk: walkway on a wall top, protected by a parapet.
ward: courtyard enclosure of a castle. More confined version of a bailey with a stone wall.

Wall Plate.
A timber laid longitudinally along the top of a building wall to receive the ends of the rafters. In a timber framed building the posts and studs of the wall below are tenoned into it.

Timber placed at the eaves of a roof, designed to take the weight of the roof timbers and coverings.

Rafter: roof-timber sloping up from the wall plate to the ridge.
Principal: principal rafter, usually corresponding to the main bay divisions of the nave or chancel below.
Wall Plate: timber laid longitudinally on the top of a wall.

Roof Run - The horizontal distance from the outside of a bearing wall plate to the center of the ridge rafter.
Roof Span - Equal to twice the roof run, or the horizontal distance between the outside faces of bearing wall plates.

Hip - The external angle formed by the meeting of two sloping sides of a roof, which have their wall plates running in different directions.
Hip Roof - A roof which has four sloping sides that meet at four hips or at four hips and a ridge.
