Wall Plate.
A timber laid longitudinally along the top of a building wall to receive the ends of the rafters. In a timber framed building the posts and studs of the wall below are tenoned into it.

Wall Plate: Timber placed at the eaves of a roof, to take the weight of the roof timbers.

Wall Plate Timber normally fixed on top of a wall to receive floor joists or roof rafters.
Wall Tie Usually a piece of metal bedded into the inner and outer leaves of a cavity wall to provide a physical connection between the two.

Wall Plate Timber placed at the top of a wall, designed to take the weight of the roof or floor timbers.

Waste Pipe A pipe from a wash hand basin, sink or bath to carry away the waste water into the drains.

Wall plate: In wood-frame construction involving wall studs, the studs (which see) are nailed at the top end to a top plate and at the bottom end to a bottom plate. These plates are made from lumber of the same dimensions (e.g.

Vocabulary
WALL PLATE - the top of the wall, where the rafters connect to the wall.
POST - the main vertical pieces of wood in a wall.
BRACE - the diagonal (can be curved or straight) piece of wood that helps strengthen the frame.

Collar Beam - horizontal tie beam of a roof, which is joined to opposing rafters at a level above that of the wall plates.
Collar - horizontal timber member designed to restrain opposing roof slopes.

Rafter: roof-timber sloping up from the wall plate to the ridge.
Principal: principal rafter, usually corresponding to the main bay divisions of the nave or chancel below.
Wall Plate: timber laid longitudinally on the top of a wall.

Roof Run - The horizontal distance from the outside of a bearing wall plate to the center of the ridge rafter.
Roof Span - Equal to twice the roof run, or the horizontal distance between the outside faces of bearing wall plates.

Hip - The external angle formed by the meeting of two sloping sides of a roof, which have their wall plates running in different directions.
Hip Roof - A roof which has four sloping sides that meet at four hips or at four hips and a ridge.

Plate - A length of timber or steel placed either on top of a wall to support the roof trusses (a wall plate) or fixed to a floor so that studs or a timber-framed partition can be installed (a floor plate).

Wall string - The string on the side of a stair next to the wall, as opposed to the outer string.

W Wall Plate: Horizontal roof-timber on wall-top. Wall Stair: Staircase built into the thickness of a wall.
