Watch turret: A watch tower or bartizan.
Water castle: A castle which used water defences of natural or artificial origin, or both. See wasserburg.
Water defences: See lines of defence, moat.

In Tudor times these were designed to act in lieu of a watch tower. It was found that they also afforded picturesque views across the garden, particularly the intricate elements such as the knot gardens, and also over the parkland as a whole.

Turrets arose in the medieval period in castles and churches, usually for stairs or as watch towers, in which case they could also be called "échaugettes"
Common in Queen Anne, Eastlake, Romanesque styles
