Window Unit - A combination of the frame, window, weatherstripping, sash activation device, and screen, assembled as a complete operating unit.

A window unit in which the single sash is either fixed or opens outward to the left or right. Casements are generally taller that hey are wide. They also offer complete ventilation as the entire sash opens.

wrought iron
A tough, malleable, relatively soft iron that is readily forged and welded, having a fibrous structure containing approximately 0.2% carbon and a small amount of uniformly distributed slag.

When a window unit has more than one pane, the material that separates the panes is called the muntin. The larger, more decorative separations are called mullions. In stained glass windows, each piece of coloured glass is held in place by a muntin.

Insulating glass (IG)
A combination of two or more panes of glass with a hermetically sealed air space between the panes of glass.

A mullion is a structural element which divides adjacent window units. Mullions may be made of any material, but wood and aluminum are most common, although stone is also used between windows.

Sash - An individual window unit (comprised of rails, stiles, lites, muntins) that fits inside the window frame.

Scuttle - An opening in the ceiling leading to an unfinished half-story.

Casing Inside casing is a flat, decorative moulding which covers the inside edge of the jambs and the rough openings between the window unit and the wall.

Circle top: A generic term referring to a variety of window units with one or more curved frame members, often used over another window or door.
