- (Scottish) open metal grid, hinged to form protection for a doorway, a sort of Scottish portcullis.

(Scots, lit. gate): Hinged openwork gate at a main doorway, made of iron bars alternately penetrating and penetrated.

The ultimate origin of the word is obscure; the early forms appear with a palatalized initial letter, still surviving in such dialectical forms as "yate," or in Scots "yett.

Westwork is sometimes used synonymously with narthex. Wicket: Person-sized door set into the main gate door. Wing-wall: Wall downslope of motte to protect stairway.
