Associative memory

Artificial Intelligence ASRAssociative network

Associative Memory Memory that can be referenced by content, as opposed to location. Hopfield networks will act as associative memories when trained with the Hebbian learning rule.

Hopfield network as associative memory
A primary application of the Hopfield network is an associative memory.

Among the points of interest in Poincare's work are his views on associative memory.

Associative memory: Also called `content-addressable' memory. This type of memory is not stored on any individual neuron but is a property of the whole network. It is by inputting to the network part of the memory.

Its roots can be backtraced to the original HAM (Human Associative Memory) model of memory, described by John R. Anderson and Gordon Bower in 1973[34]. The HAM model was later expanded into the first version of the ACT theory [35].

From personal experience, I can also comment that the cure for what they call "spontaneous" retrieval (as described, it sounds more like associative memory) can also be provided internally, even from "time-sense".

MATCHING: When nothing more specific is found, we can attempt to use some "basic" associative memory mechanism. This will succeed by itself only in relatively simple situations, but should play a supporting role in the other tactics.

Classification/Pattern recognition:
The task of pattern recognition is to assign an input pattern (like handwritten symbol) to one of many classes. This category includes algorithmic implementations such as associative memory.
