These "bottom-up" approaches are known as behavior-based AI, situated AI or Nouvelle AI. Computational Intelligence Interest in neural networks and "connectionism" was revived by David Rumelhart and others in the middle 1980s.

During the late 1980s, the approach now known as nouvelle AI was pioneered at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory by Rodney Brooks.
