Special feature is the auto calibration. Since the modules are supposed to react to the LED only, and not to changing ambient light conditions recalibration needs to take place on a regular basis, for example with a variable resistor.

The weights are determined arbitrary, based on unit or based on the data (calibration). For example if one variable has unit ton/cubic meter and the other variable is kg/cubic meter, then weight of 1/1000 is expected to be given to give equal units.

They must have the parts needed in precisely the right position and orientation, and if they are moved to a new location, they may require hours of recalibration.

Also, systems which suffer from wear-and-tear (and which mechanical systems don't?) need frequent recalibration or parameter determination.

Sometimes, bimodality of the distribution may indicate problems with the measurement instrument (e.g., "gage calibration problems" in natural sciences, or "response biases" in social sciences). See also unimodal distribution, multimodal distribution.
