Indicators (Class)
In a data base, categorical variables are usually represented by their modalities, which are non numerical quantities.
Many performance indicators in information fusion, financial analysis, data mining, statistical pattern recognition and machine learning are actually one of these means or averages.
For example, suppose you had a design matrix containing various categorical indicators of health related behaviors (e.g., whether or not the individual smoked, exercised, etc.).
