Applying and separating (aspects): whenever two planets are just about to form an aspect, the faster moving planet is said to be applying. As the two planets move away from the exact aspect they are called; separating.
Applying and separating transits
There is a pattern to the formation of aspects which is quite observable if you test it on slower-moving transits. Transits apply, become exact, and then separate, and there is quite a different feeling to each.
Applying and Separating Aspects: When two planets are moving towards each other to make an exact aspect they are said to be applying. When two planets have already perfected the aspect and are moving apart, they are said to be separating.
Another clue to understanding the continuous movement and interpenetration of the planetary cycles is the concept of applying and separating aspects.
Aspect Highlighting and Filtering differentiates between applying and separating and weights the tighter aspects in bolder lines. This is great fun to play with but beware the separating aspect of just a few minutes.
The faster planet does the applying and separating, i.e. Venus at 14° Sagittarius would form an applying aspect to Saturn at 16° Pisces. If you Saturn is at an earlier degree of its sign than Venus, the aspect would be a separating one.
