Dignities: Refers to the affinities between signs and planets.
Direct: The opposite of retrograde. Designated in the ephemeris by the letter D.
Dignities and Debilities. Conditions of placement wherein a planet's influence is strengthened, are termed Dignities; if weakened they are termed Debilities. These are of two varieties: Essential and Accidental.

Dignities & Debilities
- Dignities and debilities are called 'essential' when they are defined by zodiacal position; the others are called 'accidental'. Thus exaltation is an essential dignity, but combustion and angularity are accidental.

Status of a planet. It is of two kinds, viz., Naisargika, the inherent, and Tatkalika, the accidental.

Planets are said to "rule" or to be "essentially dignified" in certain signs where the essential nature of planet and sign agree.

These dynamics are based on the Essential dignities and traditional rulers. The rulers and dignities allow us to follow threads of interconnection between apparently separate bodies and houses in the horoscope.
Reception - Planets in each other's dignities act as though in good aspect to each other. When in each other's debilities, planets act as though in adverse aspect to each other. Especially important when comparing nativities of two people.
