The Elements divide the twelve signs into four groups of three signs each: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. The signs allocated to the same Element are believed to share basic psychological and temperamental characteristics.

The most basic component of any chart are the elements -- fire, earth, air and water. When taking a first look at a chart, take a look at the elements in play.
The elements can be further sorted into two more groups: the positive, masculine, or yang in expression, and those that are negative, feminine, or yin.
Elements: Ancients believed that the universe consisted of four primary elements, air, earth, fire and water from which the triplicities (also called elements), a four-fold division of the zodiac, are derived.

Astrology and its interpretation is built up in a series of layers. The elements form the foundation layer.
The elements that are low or lacking are the ones not believed valid or "positive". There are 0 points in Fire! A mistrust of the self (nation) and a difficulty entering into experiences with trust and spontaneity.

When these elements are translated as personality traits or temperament, they become important features of the delineation.
About the Elements
Defining characteristics in terms of Elements is based on whether a person's initial (elementary) reaction to everything in life is physical, pragmatic, intellectual, or emotional.
Mars in the Elements
Mars in Fire people (that is, those with Mars in Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) are generally quite passionate. When they get angry, those around them generally know it.
The Signs are further grouped into one of the four Elements. The Elements Fire, Earth, Air and Water each have its own temperament. The Fire Signs are vital and intense. Earth Signs are practical and stable. Air Signs are social and intellectual.

The cardinal signs are the initiators of the zodiac. You are active, vigorous and enterprising with verve, courage, ambition and great leadership potential.
