Elements and Qualities - There are 4 elements: Fire, Earth, Air, Water. There are 3 Qualities: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable. A person's disposition is determined by these influences.
The Elements and Qualities
The basic structural components of the world are known as elements, modified, or flavoured by their modalities, or qualities. In astrology, four material elements are recognised: Fire, Earth, Air and Water (see table).

The pattern of elements and qualities in the astrological signs is constant-every third sign has the same element. Every fourth sign has the same quality. So, each of the twelve signs represents a different combination of element and quality.
The zodiacal signs and planets represent these elements and qualities. The Vedic seers understood this fact and classified the signs and planets according to their innate nature.

The importance of Elements and Qualities in our lives is their demonstration that we are all part of the environment. There is a connection between all living things and all matter on this Planet.
Each zodiac sign is part of a triplicity or quadruplicity, otherwise known as the elements and qualities. These form the basis for psychological analysis of the character, the foundations from which to build the layers on to complete the picture.
