Essential Dignity:
A planet is strengthened or essentially dignified when it is in a sign which agrees with its own nature. This is thoroughly explained under 'Dignity,' which see.

A planet's essential dignity is found by using the table of dignities and seeing which of its own positions a planet occupies in the chart under discussion. Rulership, exaltation, and triplicity are the important ones; term and face are less so.

In addition to Essential dignity, the traditional astrologer considers Accidental dignity of planets. This is placement by house in the chart under examination. Accidental dignity describes the planet's "ability to act".

Exaltation - Essential dignity of a planet, possibly even more powerful than being in its own sign.

Peregrine Planet positioned in a sign where it posesses no essential dignity. It is neither dignified nor debilitated. It is a planet that seems to be independant of others.

Said of a planet that does not occupy a sign of essential dignity or debilitation and is not in mutual reception with any other planet.

If the Sign which a planet rules is on the cusp of the House in which the planet is posited, the planet may be described as the Lord of the House: but the strength as such depends upon its Essential Dignity by virtue of its Sign placement.

Note: Almutens were used by the Arabic astrologers and refer to the planet with the most essential dignity at a point along the zodiac. The idea was that a planet with the most dignity was the most free to act effectively on behalf of the Querent.
