Exaltations - qualities are strong and supported when planet's find themselves in the sign of their exaltation, and feel like a pampered visitor.

 


The use of exaltations, terms, faces and triplicities is very ancient and was certainly not invented by Ptolemy.

The basis on which these Exaltations were assigned is lost in antiquity. Certain correspondences are worthy of notice, as bearing on their selection.

For example, planetary exaltations originated with the Babylonians and are still used today; the Babylonians named the benefic and malefic planets; defined Triplicities, albeit without the elements as they're recognized today; ...

Of course, there were "good" parts to astrology as well, such as benefics and exaltations, but these only served to underscore the determinism of the system.

It is true to say that a planet has importance and validity in every sign of the zodiac, but rulerships and so-called detriments, exaltations and falls (dreadful archaic terms, but there is no modern replacement!) typify the pattern of working of ...

The planets work best at revealing their true nature in signs that are designated by astrologers as their “dignities and exaltations' (known collectively as planetary “honors').

I have only touched upon some sketching of the dignities, exaltations or falls/detriments and why they manifest as they do.

Some of the exaltations and rulerships are not traditional, but are widely accepted by astrologers today.

And in the sign opposite its exaltation, its "fall," planets express themselves most poorly and are at their weakest. The last three columns of the planets table in "You and the Universe" on page 21 list planetary detriments, exaltations and falls.
