House Systems used in Astrology
There are many house systems to choose from, but many have fallen by the wayside in recent years and are little used. For beginners the Equal House System is the most basic and simplest to understand.

 


House Systems. The ways in which the astrological chart is divided and the house cusps established. There are many theories and systems, including Placidus, Koch, Equal, Regiomontanus, Campanus, Solar, etc.

All house systems agree on the validity of the horizon, and so I felt this was the place to start. This proved to be a most worthwhile exercise.

Quadrant house systems divide the houses so that they agree with the "quadrant" concept (ascendant on the first house cusp, nadir on the fourth, descendant on the seventh, and midheaven on the tenth).

Horoscope House Systems
There are a number of different house systems. These include such popular systems as "Equal House" and Placidus House" systems. The Equal House method divides the horoscope into 12 equal houses starting at the Ascendant.

Trying out house systems other than Placidus is often seen as a difficult business. In fact, it is possible to set up houses for most systems using Placidian tables, such as Raphael's Tables of Houses for Northern Latitudes.

The Equal House system is the oldest still in use, dating from the first century BC. In this system, each house is exactly 30 degrees, starting with the Ascendant as the cusp of the first house.

I want to briefly mention the complex question regarding house systems. The houses were created by early astrologers to divide space, and there are different approaches taken in measuring house division.

It marks the 10th house cusp in most house systems. Astrologically, it represents career, status, reputation, life goals and aspirations.

Competing house systems is one of the main problems in astrology from that point of view, quite apart from the problem of the sidereal versus tropical zodiacs. How do we decide which house system to use, let alone which zodiac?

This interception effect also only happens with certain house systems, which have variable sized houses. Equal house system does not have this distortion, since the houses are always 30 degrees in length.

Placidus House System - known as the most popular of the house systems, it's calculated from night and day, spacing the zodiac, then crosses the elliptic path 1 degree every four minutes.

There are numerous other house systems. The latest poll on the topic I saw rated Placidus the most common and Koch was the second most common in usage. The charts calculated are available in computer generated format, Kepler 4.

Planet: From the Greek "Planetes" or the wanderer. Describes any body that appears, from Earth, to move.

Mid-heaven - Meridien, or MC (Medium Coeli). The point of the chart at which the meridien intercepts the ecliptic. In many house systems the MC is also the cusp of the tenth house.

Now we complicate this a little more: There are several methods of calculating houses. The methods are named after the inventors of the system. Some of the most used house systems are; Koch; Campanus; Placidus; Equal; Porphrey; and Meridan.
