Jyotisha or Jyotish is the actual Sanskrit name for Vedic Astrology and means the "eye or light of nature".
In the more traditional and medieval branches of astrology, incluidng Vedic or Jyotish, there is an underlying assumption that one's destiny is already written and can be predicted using astrology.
Thus was born the science of Vedic astrology, which is known as "JYOTISHA" or 'illuminator' in Sanskrit. Vedas are knowledge taught by teacher to disciple through the medium of sound. They cannot be learnt by reading or memorizing.
Sanchita Karmas are assumed to form a constant karmic background that is not totally comprehensible by ordinary means, Jyotish included. It is Sanchita Karma that prompts Indians to claim that the ways of karma are unfathomable.
