Light Year: the distance light travels in one year; at the speed of 186,282 miles/second, this amounts to a distance of 5.88 trillion miles. Notice that a light year is a unit of distance, not of time. The nearest star is 4.

 


We can then speak of "light-seconds," "light-minutes," "light-hours," and "light years" as the distance light travels in each of those time intervals.

We live 15,000 light years from the centre of the galaxy (one light year is 60,000,000,000,000 miles). Even though this sounds like a ridiculously long distance, it is significant only within the context of our own galaxy.
