Lunar Mansions are segments along the ecliptic that the Moon "visited" each month; they are among the most ancient forms of astrology extant. There is one mansion for each day in a lunar cycle between successive new Moons.

Most likely, the Lunar mansions started much later than the Hellenistic period (323 BC to 146 BC) as there are no records indicating that the Lunar mansions, as we know them here in the West, were used before or during, that period.

Other differences between the two traditions include the use of 27 (or 28) nakshatras or lunar mansions, which have been used in India since Vedic times, and the system of planetary periods known as dashas.

Fragmentary interpretations of the Lunar Mansions have come down to us from Arabia, India and China. The precise manner in which they were employed has been lost, but it is known that great importance was attached to them.

They were the names of the Nakshatras and the names of the Chaldean and Chinese lunar mansions. The star constellations were and are the "realm of the gods.". "Swarga Loka" is the name of this heavenly realm.

Instead the emphasis is on the system of 27 (or 28) nakshatras or lunar mansions, which have been used in Indian astrology since Vedic times.

These lunar mansions appear in Chinese and Arabic astrology but have not received much attention in Western or European astrology. Each of the 27 Nakshatras consists of 13º and 20 minutes of the zodiac.
