In astrology the term malefic is used to refer to something that has a detrimental or negative meaning within the context of astrological interpretations.
In practice, the term is usually used in either a strict sense or a general sense: ...

- also known as 'infortunes', these are planets that naturally symbolise damage and loss. Traditionally these are Saturn, the 'Greater Malefic' and Mars, the 'Lesser Malefic'. Both are extreme in nature: Saturn being cold and dry, and Mars exceeding in heat.

Weak Malefics
When judging any chart - natal, horary, mundane, event, election - it is essential to observe the condition and qualities of the significators. The significators are the planets, house cusps or points which represent the matter being investigated.

Functional malefic are any planet whose moolatrikona sign is in 6th, 8th or 12th house.

Aries: Mercury, Rahu and Ketu.
Taurus: Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu.
Gemini: Rahu and Ketu.
Cancer: Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
Leo: The Moon, Rahu and Ketu.
Virgo: Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu.

~ A term used in Classical and Medieval/Renaissance Astrology that refers to planets or aspects thought to have negative influence on the native. It usually refers to the planet Saturn and Mars, the Major ~s (or Greater) .

A planet which does not easily produce results which would be considered "good". Generally speaking ~s are not so much "bad" as it is that they require more thought, more consciousness, and more skill at managing life than the benefics require in most cases.

Greater ~ - A term applied to Saturn.
Great Year -The astrological year based on the time it takes Earth's axis to complete on revolution around the pole of the ecliptic, about twenty-five thousand years. A Great Year is divided into twelve "months" of about two thousand years duration.

Greater ~ A term applied to Saturn, the planet ancients believed to generate the evils in life.

All ~ planets like Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu, no matter what their status in the chart will have some ~ aspects with respect to some areas in your life.

~ : A planet that operates in a difficult, unpleasant manner, often producing negative or unwanted results after much effort. Meridian : The vertical plane over an observer that passes directly north-south and straight overhead.

(i.) If ~s are in the first fifteen degrees of odd signs or in the last fifteen degrees of even signs, the native is strong, pushing, industrious, very courageous and wealthy.

- It causes ~ impact on houses occupied by Rahu and Ketu.

Now these old ~s are seen differently, and have become sought after sources of knowledge about who we are, what we may have "brought over" from a previous life, and where we're going in this one.

affliction: This is a condition of a planet that is poorly aspected by ~s or ill dignified.
alchocoden: This is the bound lord of the apheta (or hyleg) according to Hellenistic sources. Medieval era astrologers usually used the almuten of the hyleg. Used in length of life calculations.

I read in a karmic astrology book by Celeste Teal that a planet (especially a ~ one like mars) in the degree of the nodes is an indication of a fateful and, otherwise, negative event. That sounds wretched. Could you help me understand this somewhat better?

Saturn sets boundaries, contains, restricts and limits. Astrological tradition considered it the most difficult of all the planets and called it the "greater ~." Scorpio is associated with sex, death, power and transformation. We are in for an interesting ride.
