Cardinal : One of the modalities for expressing elemental energies. The cardinal expression of an element is the initial or beginning phase of that element, its most straightforward or direct expression.

The signs are further divided into modalities, modes or triplicities. There are three types under this category cardinal, fixed and mutable and each has four signs grouped under a mode. The cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.
