Classifying Zodiac Signs by Modality
There are three modes: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. The Cardinal Signs are efficacious and self starters. Fixed Signs are focused and determined. Mutable Signs are flexible and adaptable.
Modality - The 3 modalities are different styles or manners of expression of the 4 elemental energies. These modalities go by the names cardinal, fixed and mutable.

The second division of zodiacal signs is by modality, which is sometimes referred to as triplicities as there are three types of modes: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable.
Every sign is associated with a unique combination of an element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water) and a modality (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable), and Taurus is the Fixed Earth sign.
Water is the most emotional element, and mutable is the most adaptable modality. Pisces are extremely sensitive to energy and vibes, and tend to absorb the emotional atmosphere around them.
The fixed modality is the consolidating or focusing phase of the element, when the energies are made most stable and permanent. It involves a solidification around a central point in order to make the energy resistant to change.
Unless it's an out-of-sign quincunx, the signs not only are of a different element, they are also of a different modality. For example, take Leo-Pisces. Leo is Fixed Fire, while Pisces is Mutable Water.
This is why Taureans from an early age place great emphasis on finding a modality of earning money which will give them creature comforts and a future security path which they instinctively feel is important to them.
