Modern Planets. Refers to those planets discovered in "modern" times: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, although the latter had its status as planet downgraded to a dwarf planet or an item in the Kuiper belt in the early 21st century.

Leaving out the modern planets, we find the Moon (id, child) at one end of the continuum and Saturn (superego, parent) at the other. Midway between the two is the Sun (ego, adult).
While I do not use the modern planets (i.e., Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto) as sign rulers, they do give important secondary information. Neptune is associated with both drugs and conspiracy, reflecting the facts of our case.
In addition, classical/traditional astrologers had ways of understanding subtle forces without recourse to modern planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) which remain extraordinarily clear.
Many Western astrologers feel the modern planets should be regarded as being the modern planetary rulers of certain signs, although many of them still use traditional rulerships as well.
It is a fairly recent discovery and therefore referred to as one of the "modern planets." Neptune was discovered in 1848 when astronomers solved the mystery of why Uranus was being pulled off its orbit.
