Nova: Literally new star; applied to stars that suddenly appear with great brilliance then fade; an exploding star.
Nova. Literally, a new star. Actually a nova is an old star which from an unknown cause appears to have exploded with cataclysmic violence.

Nova in the crown of Cepheus: This was called "Nova Lacertae 1936" - it was on the line drawn by the IAU between Cepheus and the modern constellation Lacerta and was assigned to Lacerta; it actually appeared in the original crown of Cepheus, the King.
The nova that Tycho Brahe saw that cold November night in 1572 in Cassiopeia certainly had considerable meaning for him personally as well as cosmology in general.
An example: In the summer of 1975 there was a nova in Cygnus at about 7 Pisces which was bright and lasted 4 days. For a nova, a year of effect is given for a day of visibility (the novas of 1572 and 1604 are still in effect!).
