Ptolemaic System - Ancient geocentric cosmic schema, based in the belief that the planets, Sun, Moon and stars revolved around the earth. Formalised by Hellenic astrologer Ptolemy.

The Ptolemaic system of the universe was dominant and was to remain so for many centuries.

Here, the Ptolemaic system is described, thus explaining why some planets seemed to move backwards for periods of time in their orbit around earth. He theorized that each planet also revolved in a smaller circle as well as a larger one.

Introduced to maintain aristotelian circular motion of planets, in order to explain retrograde motion of planets in the ancient geocentric Ptolemaic system.
