An apparent backward motion of the planets is called a "retrograde" motion. It occurs in several stages.

The term Retrograde is applied to the motion of any celestial body that as appeared from the Earth, is going backwards through the Zodiac. How does a planet whose total mass is beyond visual conception, go backwards?

WHY ARE RETROGRADES AND DIRECT IMPORTANT?
Depending upon what zodiac sign the planet is in when it goes retrograde and direct, is of major interest.

The retrograde period is best seen as a cycle, beginning when Mars begins to slow to a halt before travelling backwards through the zodiac, and ending when he returns to the point where he first paused.

Planet Station Retrograde -- This marks a period where the geocentric position stops moving forward in the zodiac (ahead of the helio position) and begins to move back over the new area it has just traversed.

During the retrograde period you should go back over existing information. As Mercury makes the station direct, you are still not ready to come to a conclusion, but can re-inspect the problem in a rational manner.

A planet moves backwards through the Zodiac in its Geocentric position - as seen from the earth. For the personal planets, Mercury, Venus and Mars, this happens rarely in terms of total duration.

From our perspective here on Earth planets appear to move backwards in the sky during certain parts of their orbits. This retrograde motion is considered to be meaningful by most astrologers.

Mercury Retrograde
All planets (except the Sun and Moon) go retrograde some of the time. Retrograde means the planet appears to go backwards, and means that the planet's energy is internalised, intense and often difficult to express outwardly.

Retrograde planets in a birth map were anciently said to be weak or debilitated, but a more logical interpretation would seem to indicate that the influence is rendered stronger, which in the case of a malefic planet is definitely unfortunate.

RETROGRADE MOTION:
Refers to a planet that appears to be moving backwards as seen from the Earth.

Saturn retrograded and again opposed Saturn, turned direct, and opposed it a final time. This process occurs often and signifies a complex belief structure with accompanying issues, not easily resolved.

It is the retrograde Planets which serve to mix things up. By appearing to move backward, these Planets generate a diffused and unfocused energy. The message of retrograde Planets will be garbled and less effective as a result.
