Separating Aspect: One in which the significator (faster moving planet of the two in aspect) is moving away from partile (the degree at which the aspect is exact).
Separating Aspect. When a faster-moving planet is moving away from (separating from) a slower moving planet.
Septile. A planetary aspect in which two planets or bodies are 36 degrees apart.

Separating Aspects - show what has already happened
Antiscion - the shadow of a planet. Antiscia are also known as solstice points.
APPLYING & SEPARATING ASPECTS
When two planets are moving together to an exact aspect they are applying. When they are moving apart from the exact aspect they are separating.
There is the theory that separating aspects in the birth map represent influences which have already been made manifest; while forming aspects, particularly in the progressed map, represent influences which are yet to be experienced.
Another clue to understanding the continuous movement and interpenetration of the planetary cycles is the concept of applying and separating aspects.
Not to be confused with separating aspect. Waning Moon The Moon moving from Full Moon to New Moon, i.e. from her opposition to the Sun until she reaches the conjunction.
Since separating aspects generally show what has already taken place, it is the applying aspects to consider.
APPLYING ASPECT - An applying aspect moves toward perfection; a separating aspect has already taken place. The faster moving planet is the applying body. If a direct planet, the aspect is mutually applying.
Separating: said of an aspect whose orb increases as time goes on. A separating aspect is said to be weaker than an applying aspect.

In my opinion, applying aspects denote things to come, while separating aspects show things that have already passed.
Applying aspect - One in which the significator is moving toward partile as opposed to a separating aspect in which the significator is moving away from partile.
Separating: When the distance between two Planets in aspect is widening away from the exact, it is said to be a separating aspect. See Applying: ...
Applying: said of an aspect that becomes closer or more exact with time; such an aspects is said to be stronger than a separating aspect.
Applying aspects these tend to be stronger and the applying planet more likely to be the stronger influence. Venus at a later degree than Saturn would form a separating aspect giving the upper hand to Saturn.
So if the quick Moon is 118º behind slow-moving Saturn, it is moving out of a 120º trine as it gets closer to Saturn; this is called a separating aspect.
