APPLYING & SEPARATING ASPECTS When two planets are moving together to an exact aspect they are applying. When they are moving apart from the exact aspect they are separating.
There is the theory that separating aspects in the birth map represent influences which have already been made manifest; while forming aspects, particularly in the progressed map, represent influences which are yet to be experienced.
Another clue to understanding the continuous movement and interpenetration of the planetary cycles is the concept of applying and separating aspects.

In my opinion, applying aspects denote things to come, while separating aspects show things that have already passed.

Applying: said of an aspect that becomes closer or more exact with time; such an aspects is said to be stronger than a separating aspect.
Applying aspects these tend to be stronger and the applying planet more likely to be the stronger influence. Venus at a later degree than Saturn would form a separating aspect giving the upper hand to Saturn.
So if the quick Moon is 118º behind slow-moving Saturn, it is moving out of a 120º trine as it gets closer to Saturn; this is called a separating aspect.
