What is the Sidereal Zodiac? In regard to Rasis or Signs, the Sidereal Zodiac is made up of 30 degree portions beginning with the Nakshatra of Aswini as measured from certain fixed stars.

Sidereal Zodiac - Sidereal zodiac moves with the constellations. When the constellation of Aries moved, the constellation of Pisces moved into the position it vacated. Sidereal now calls the area of the chart traditionally ruled by Aries Pisces.

Very few astrologers in the west use the Sidereal Zodiac in place of the Tropical Zodiac in reference to Natal Astrology (birth horoscopes). These astrologers are called Siderealists. Also the Sidereal Zodiac is used by most Indian astrologers who practice the ancient art of Vedic Astrology.

On the other hand, those who use the sidereal zodiac tend to use the constellations that lie along the ecliptic as the primary reference point for their system, although there is some disagreement about the precise degree that should be used as the starting point.

Aries, the first sign, starts on the first day of Spring (vernal equinox). Most Asian astrologers (and a small minority of westerners) use the Sidereal Zodiac based on the constellations. The two Zodiacs coincided about 2000 years ago, but have since slipped out of phase by almost one sign.

Valens tied the zodiac to the seasons, essentially creating the Tropical Zodiac, which cut its tie with the stars, or Sidereal Zodiac, another difference from the Babylonian zodiac.
