The Solstices
Rob Tillett, one of the founders of Astrology on the Web, discusses the Solstices, which, along with the Equinoxes, mark the four great arms of the Cardinal Cross in the tropical year.

The Equinoxes and the Solstices mark the beginning of the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere and also mark the entry of the sun into each of the cardinal zodiac signs.

Solstices: winter (0 Capricorn) and summer (0 Cancer), in which the Sun is lowest or highest in the northern hemisphere sky; the shortest and longest days of the year; the gateways to the timeless or to the power of life.

Solstices. The points in the ecliptic where the Sun is at its greatest distance to the north or south of the equator, and marked by the entry of the Sun into Cancer in Summer and into Capricorn in Winter.

There are two solstices. One in midsummer, the 21st of June, which is the longest day in the year, another on the 21st of December, which is the shortest. They are called respectively, the summer and the winter solstice.
Southern Signs: ...

The Solstices and the Equinoxes represent four fixed nodes (the points where the amplitude of the wave form is zero as it crosses the axis representing the plane of the Earth's rotation around the Sun).

By the time of Hipparchus, however (2nd century BCE), the equinoxes and solstices were slipping noticeably out of sync with the beginnings of the constellations they were identified with.

There is a remarkably tight alignment of the Solstices on the same place as the center of our Milky Way Galaxy at this time. The New Moon is so closely aligned with the Sun on the Moon's Nodes that it is causing this total eclipse.

Cancer and Capricorn mark instead the Solstices of Winter and Summer, of course depending also on the Hemisphere. They are motivated, physically and mentally active, sometimes even hyper active.

Tropical: referring to the northerly or southerly turning of the Sun twice a year at the solstices. This marks the seasonal cycle of light and dark on the Earth bringing about the 12 signs.

( Sol, the Sun. sistere, to make stand. ) The Sun at the solstices is at its turning point in its apparent course and its declination remains essentially the same for three days.

Antiscia are arrived at by reflection of the axis of the solstices, which is a line from 0 degrees Cancer to 0 degrees Capricorn. The antiscion of a planet is regarded as if it is actually placed there.

Seasons are defined by the solstices (times of maximum or minimum daylight, in June and December) and the equinoxes (times of equal day and night, in March and September).

Naturally, since the solstices represent the points on the ecliptic where the Sun reaches maximum declination north (at 0° Cancer) and South (0° Capricorn), ...

The maximum possible declination of the Sun is 23° 28' which occurs at the Solstices, when the Sun passes the Tropics (0°) of Cancer and Capricorn, the limit of the pole's greatest inclination from the plane of the Earth's orbit.

At the time of the equinoxes, the Sun is traveling along the line of the equator, and is at 0 declination, but at the time of the solstices (the longest day or night), the Sun's path is 23°27' from the equator.

Solsticial Signs - Cancer and Capricorn. These signs hold the summer and winter solstices cf Equinoctial Signs.
Sortilege - is the casting of lots and the assessment of omens indicated. Divination by casting or drawing lots.

regularised to 30° each; the second Zodiac is called tropical (Greek: tropoi, the turning-points of the Sun), the most widely used one in the West, and the signs of the Zodiac are defined by the position of the Sun at the equinoxes and solstices, ...

Solstice: The sun appears to stand still at the summer solstice marked by 0 degrees Cancer and then again at the winter solstice marked by 0 degrees Capricorn. The solstices mark the beginning of summer and winter.

IC means the bottom of the heavens. This represents home, family and ancestry. Ingress Signs - these signs coincide with the solstices and equinoxes and include the Cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.

But to it you should add others things that would help you to comprehend the cosmic phenomena [equinoxes, solstices, phases of the Moon, high and low tides, eclipses, etc., etc.

Cancer and Capricorn; so-called because they occupy parts of the ecliptic where the Sun reaches its farthest point north (Tropic of Cancer) and south (Tropic of Capricorn). The Sun's ingress into these signs marks the summer and winter solstices ...

Ancient astronomer priests recorded their observations on lunar cycles, the solstices and fixed stars by carving markings onto the stone. Scientists today find the calendar accurate today. Computers accurately generate Modern ephemeredes.

23° 28' either north (Cancer) or south (Capricorn) of the equator, corresponding to the furthest point of the ecliptic. The place where the Sun pauses, then reverses its declination at the summer and winter solstices.

On the saphea, the projection is from one of the equinoxes and the celestial sphere is projected onto the great circle of the celestial sphere defined by the poles and the solstices (the solsticial colure). That is, the projection is from the "side".
