Vertical Circle: a plane perpendicular to the local horizon and passing through the center of the Earth.

 


The vertical circle from the zenith to the cast and west points of the horizon is trisected. Through these points are drawn great circles, the House circles, from the north and south points of the horizon.

The vertical circle that lies at right angles to the meridian, and passes through the East point, Zenith, West point and Nadir of any place.
Primum Mobile.

It is both a vertical circle and an hour circle. The observer's meridian is the most important of all circles of reference. vertical circle: any great circle passing through both the observer's zenith and nadir.

The meridian is that "vertical circle" passing through the center of the Earth and perpendicular to the horizon (the definition of a vertical circle) that also passes through the north and south points on the horizon.

9. Altitude. A planets elevation above the horizon, measured by the arc of a vertical circle. It is at it's meridian altitude when it is at the cusp of the tenth house at the midheaven.
