The Ecliptic is he Sun's path in the heavens. It passes exactly through the center of zodiac longitudinally. The zodiac is a broad band or belt in heavens extending 9 degrees on either side of the Ecliptic.

Zodiacal longitude however does not pinpoint how far along that ray the planet lies or how close it is to the equator or the horizon. (the ascendant in a birth chart). As an example create a chart wheel and place the Sun at 22 degrees Gemini.
