airglow
The background light in the night sky caused by the atmospheric scattering of man-made light.

Airglow. The faint background glow in the night sky caused by gas in the ionosphere. Because of airglow the night sky is never completely dark as seen from Earth's surface.

Airglow
Light in the nighttime sky caused by the collision of atoms and molecules (primarily oxygen, OH, and Ne) in Earth's geocorona with charged particles and X-rays from the Sun or outer space.

Night-Sky Light
The faint, diffuse glow of the night sky. It comes from four main sources : airglow, diffuse Galactic light, Zodiacal light, and the light from these sources scattered by the troposphere. [H76] ...

The amount of airglow and zodiacal light is quite variable but given the most optimal condititions the darkest possible sky has a brightness of about 22 magnitude/square arcsecond.

See airglow. chemisorption The binding of a liquid or gas on the surface or in the interior of a solid by chemical bonds or forces. chemosphere The vaguely defined region of the upper atmosphere in which photochemical reactions take place.

Major components in the optical are airglow (much in isolated atomic and molecular emission lines) and scattered starlight from Solar System dust (zodiaal light) and interstellar dust.

In addition an Optical Laboratory with a variety of instrumentation used for the passive study of terrestrial airglow is located at the Observatory.

This false-colored image was acquired during the Clementine mission. It shows airglow of the upper atmosphere as a thin blue line. The bright spot toward the bottom is an urban area. (Courtesy Naval Research Laboratory) ...
