Aldebaran, (α Tau / α Tauri / Alpha Tauri), is the brightest star in the constellation Taurus and one of the brightest stars in the nighttime sky. Because of its location in the head of Taurus, it has historically been called the Bull's Eye.

Aldebaran is an orange K5III almost 50 times the diameter of the sun. This spectral type corresponds to an effective temperature of 3800 K and around 200 times the luminosity of the sun.

Aldebaran, at magnitude 1.0, is the brightest star in Taurus. Mars with a magnitude 1.4 will not be quite as bright as the star. Aldebaran being a red star will have a similar colour to Mars.

The leading star of this constellation, alpha Tau, called Aldebaran (arab.: the Follower (i.e. of the Pleiades)) is the 13th brightest star in the sky. It is a red (spectraltype K5III) giant of 0.85 mag.

In 150 AD, the astronomer Ptolemy described Sirius as reddish, along with five other stars, Betelgeuse, Antares, Aldebaran, Arcturus and Pollux, all of which are clearly of orange or red hue.

The brightest star in the constellation is [7931] alpha Tauri, or Aldebaran ("the follower"). Aldebaran is an orange-red giant, an irregular variable star, about 65 light-years distant.

The group at the top right, including Betelgeuse and Aldebaran, are Red Giants. The group at the bottom left, including Sirius B, are White Dwarfs.

The bull's glinting red eye is marked by the brightest star in Taurus, Aldebaran, a name that comes from the Arabic meaning ‘the follower', referring to the fact that it follows the Pleiades across the sky.

However the bright star Aldebaran is much closer (65 ly) and is a chance alignment. Without it there would be no bull in Taurus.

Use the constellation Orion to find Saturn, then draw a line upward through Orion's Belt to find the ruddy star Aldebaran and the Pleiades star cluster.

Aldebaran itself has the appearance of being the brightest member of the more scattered Hyades cluster, which is the closest star cluster to Earth.

The Winter Circle is an asterism"or pattern of stars"made up six bright stars in five different constellations: Sirius, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Aldebaran, Capella, and Procyon.

For example in the early evening in late November I see Orion leaning back on his right elbow, Taurus glaring down at him with his sparkling eyes (Aldebaran being the bull's right eye).

A significant number of stars in the sky, such as Aldebaran and Altair, and astronomical terms such as alhidade, azimuth, and almucantar, are still today recognized with their Arabic names.
History
Pre-Islamic Arabs had no scientific astronomy.

In 1718 in Philosophical Transactions Edmond Halley noted that the bright stars Sirius, Aldebaran and Arcturus had changed their positions relative to other stars since antiquity.

NGC1554 is located about 4°30' NW of Aldebaran (a Tauri - see finder chart below). Like Hubble's Variable Nebula, it also changes shape and brightness.

The brightest star (Alpha Tau) in Taurus is Aldebaran, which is one of the bull's eyes (Aldebaran is the 13th brightest star in the sky). The second-brightest star in Taurus (Beta Tau) is Alnath, the third brightest (Gamma Tau) is Hyadum I.

For centuries, bedouin Arabs had given names to bright stars - for example Aldebaran and Betelgeuse - since they regarded single stars as representing people and animals.

It should be noted that the bright red star, Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri) - the eye of the Bull - is not a member of this cluster despite lying in the Hyades field.

From comparisons between the observed places of Arcturus, Aldebaran and Sirius and the places assigned to them by Alexandrian astronomers, he was led to the opinion that all three are moving towards the south (Phil. Trans. 1718).

The one towards the southwest is Betelgeuse in Orion. The bottom star, nearly due west is Aldebaran, and very bright. This is the gleaming red eye of Taurus, the bull with whom Orion is perpetually locked in mortal combat.

Often, the way they would keep track of stars was by creating mythologies around them, much as the Greeks did. The Pleiades (an open cluster), Jupiter, and Aldebaran (a bright red star), are central to the founding story of the polynesian culture.

Pioneer 10 is heading away from our Sun generally in the direction of the red star Aldeberan. That's the main star seen as the eye of The Bull in the constellation Taurus in Earth's night sky. Aldebaran is about 68 light years away.

The Hyades are the star the make up of the v-shape of the constellation (excluding the star Aldebaran), the Pleaides (also known as the Seven Sisters) are the small group of stars found on the back of the bull.
