The second brightest star in the constellation Cepheus and the prototype Beta Cephei star.
ALFIRK (Beta Cephei). In mythology, Cepheus (the King) pales beside Cassiopeia (the Queen), who is central to the story of Andromeda. And so does his constellation, which is among the fainter of those of the Perseus myth.
[2323] beta Cephei or Alfirk ("the herd" or "the flock") is the second brightest star in the constellation. It is a pulsating variable, a triple star that appears as a visual binary comprised of a blue giant and a faint companion star.
Beta Cephei is called Alfirk ("The Herd"). This is a visual binary as well as a variable (see below).
Gamma Cephei is Er Rai (Shepherd). Long before Aldemarin becomes the Pole Star, this one will assume that title (around 4000 AD).
