Algedi

ALGEDI (Alpha Capricorni). Though only the third brightest star in the constellation Capricornus, the "Water Goat," Algedi is still the Alpha star, most likely because of its western-most position within the classical figure.

The double alpha Cap, known as Algedi (arabic: 'goat' or 'ibex'), consists of a G3 supergiant of 4.24 mag and a G8 giant of 3.57 mag brightness. They can be spotted without optical help.

The star Alpha Capricorni is variously called Algedi or Giedi, from the Arabic al-jady meaning ‘the kid', the Arabic name for the constellation. Delta Capricorni is called Deneb Algedi, from the Arabic for ‘the kid's tail'.

The planet Neptune was discovered in this constellation by German astronomer Johann Galle, near Deneb Algedi (δ Capricorni) on September 23, 1846, which is reasonable as Capricornus can be seen best at 9:00 in September.

Alpha Capricorni is also known as Algedi or Giedi, from the Arabic word for "the goat." It is a multiple star that consists of two yellow and orange stars, both binaries themselves, and can be seen by the naked eye.

Alpha Capricorni is known as Al Giedi or Algedi (the goat or ibex).
This is a double star, alpha1 and alpha2 Capricorni. Alpha2 is the primary, although they only make an optical pair. Each star is however a visual binary (see below for details).
