Also called "Algenib," Arabic for "side" (a name used for other stars as well), the name Mirfak has nothing to with the hero, and comes from a long Arabic phrase that means "the elbow of the Pleiades.

*α Per (Mirfak): The brightest star of this constellation is also called Algenib (a name which is used for other stars as well, e. g. γ Peg). Mirfak (Arabic for elbow) is a supergiant of spectral type F5 Ib with an apparent brightness of 1.

It lies in the northwestern corner (0:39:21.8+21:15:1.7, ICRS 2000.0) of Constellation Pisces -- northeast of Algenib (Gamma Pegasi), southeast of Alpheratz (Alpha Andromedae), southwest of Delta Andromedae and Mirach (Beta Andromedae), ...

Half way between Capella and Mirfak (alpha Persei, a.k.a. Algenib) and five degrees north of this last star, are the feet of the Giraffe. Roughly half way between Algenib and the North Pole is gamma Camelopardalis, the haunch of the giraffe.   ...

The other name is Algenib from the Arabic meaning ‘the side', which is where Ptolemy described it as lying. Perseus is depicted holding aloft his sword in his right hand.
