ALKES (Alpha Crateris). Among the dimmest of all classical constellations is Crater, the Cup, which with Corvus, the Crow, rides the back of Hydra, the Water Serpent.

It lies in the northwest part (11:21:49-13:13.1 C~, ICRS 2000.0) of Constellation Crater, the Cup -- roughly north of Alkes (Alpha Crateris), northwest of Delta Crateris, northeast of Nu Hydrae, and south of Constellation Leo.

[2987] alpha Crateris or Alkes ("the cup") is slightly fainter, with a magnitude of 4.08. It is an orange giant moving at a relatively high velocity, faster than the neighbouring stars.

Alchiba (α Crv), Alphard (α Hya), Algorab (δ Crv), Alkes (α Crt), Asmidiske (ξ Pup), Markab (κ Vel), Naos (ζ Pup), Suhail (or Regor, γ Vel), Al Suhail al Wazu, (Gienah, γ Crv) Sulhail Hadar (λ ...
