Alnilam is a blue B0Ia supergiant star. According to the The Bright Star Catalog the star is about 30 times the diameter of the sun. The spectral type implies an effective temperature of 30,000 K and a luminosity of 250,000 times that of the sun.

Alnilam is a large blue star in the constellation of Orion. It also has the modern name Epsilon Orionis (ε Ori / ε Orionis). Its Flamsteed designation is 46 Orionis.

(Number 7 is Alnilam, Delta Orionis.) The name (oddly, originally applied to Capella) translates from Latin as "the female warrior" (a contrast with Orion as a giant warrior rather than as a hunter), and sometimes as the "Amazon Star.

From the northern hemisphere, the three bright stars (Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka) in a straight line that form Orion's Belt are easily visible on the southern horizon in winter evenings.

The three stars of the belt - Zeta, Epsilon and Delta Orionis - are called Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. The names Alnitak and Mintaka both come from the Arabic word meaning ‘the belt' or ‘girdle'.

[5974] epsilon Orionis or Alnilam ("the string of pearls") is a blue-white supergiant, about four million years old. It is the central star of Orion's belt and the 30th brightest star in the sky.

Named Stars: BETELGEUSE (Alpha Ori) RIGEL (Beta Ori) BELLATRIX (Gamma Ori) MINTAKA (Delta Ori) ALNILAM (Epsilon Ori) ALNITAK (Zeta Ori) Nair al Saif (Iota Ori) SAIPH (Kappa Ori) Meissa (Lambda Ori) Tabit (Pi 3 Ori) Tabit (Pi 2 Ori) Tabit (Pi 4 Ori) ...

The constellation's main feature is of course the three stars which form the "belt" across the middle of Orion: from west to east Mintaka, Alnilam, and Alnitak. Even the Bible makes reference to this famous group.

Mintaka (Delta Orionis) is the uppermost and faintest of the three major stars that form belt of Orion, a in the Northern Hemisphere (the other two stars in the belt ate and Alnilam).

Named stars: Alpha Ori (Beteigeuze/Betelgeuse), Beta Ori (Rigel), Gamma Ori (Bellatrix), Delta Ori (Mintaka), Epsilon Ori (Alnilam), Zeta Ori (Alnitak)

Alnitak (Zeta Orionis) is a star at the eastern end of the Orion's belt (in the constellation Orion). Alnitak means belt. Alnitak is spectral Type O9.7Ib. It is also known as Alnitah. The other two stars in Orion's belt are Alnilam and Mintaka.

Two air shafts slope upwards from the main burial chamber. These shafts are aligned with two stars of religious importance: Thuban (the North Star at the time) and Alnilam (the center star in Orion's belt).
