HAMAL (Alpha Arietis). Climbing the eastern sky in northern Autumn, Aries presents a small flat triangle below Andromeda dominated by mid-second-magnitude (2.00) Hamal.

Hamal is Alpha Arietis, that is, the alpha star of Aries. It is therefore sometimes referred to simply as "Arietis."
Description of the Star
Hamal is a cool, orange K2-IIICa-1 giant. with a luminosity about 55 times that of the sun.

It can be found southeast of Hamal (Alpha Arietis), Sheratan (Beta Arietis), Mesarthim (Gamma Arietis), and spiral galaxy M 74; northeast of Alrescha (Alpha Piscium); and northwest of Lamda, Mu, Xi2, and Nu Ceti, ...

The ram's body consists of the stars alpha Arietis, eta Arietis, epsilon Arietis, 41 Arietis, and 35 Arietis: epsilon Arietis and 41 Arietis being of the fourth magnitude.
The ram's tail consists of the stars 35 Arietis, 41 Arietis, and 39 Arietis.

Of these three stars, Alpha Arietis is called Hamal, from the Arabic for lamb; Beta Arietis is Sheratan, from the Arabic meaning ‘two' of something (possibly two signs or two horns, ...

The brightest star of Aries, [630] alpha Arietis, is also known as El Nath and Hamal, or "the head of the sheep." It is a K-type giant that shines with a reddish colour and has a mass twice that of the Sun.
