(l´f sntõr´), brightest star in the constellation Centaurus and 3d-brightest star in the sky; also known as Rigil Kent or Rigil Kentaurus; 1992 position R.A. 14h39.1m, Dec.

Alpha Centauri A
Rigil Kentaurus ("Foot of the Centaur" in Arabic) is the fourth brightest star in the night sky as well as the brightest star in Constellation Centaurus.

Alpha Centauri
The nearest star system to the Sun. Alpha Centauri lies at a distance of 4.395 light-years (1.349 parsecs) in the constellation Centaurus.

Alpha Centauri A is a yellow star with a spectral type of G2, the same as the Sun's. Therefore its temperature and color also match those of the Sun. Alpha Centauri B is an orange star with a spectral type of K1.

Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to our Solar System, should harbour detectable Earth-like planets, according to a new study by astronomers at the University of Santa Cruz.

Alpha Centauri Through telescopes, we find that the Sun's nearest neighbor is really a system of three stars, slowly orbiting around one another. Alpha Centauri A (the brightest of the three) is very similar to our yellow Sun.

, the closest star system to Earth, may contain planets which could be capable of sustaining life.

ALPHA CENTAURI
Alpha Centauri is the star system that is closest to the Earth. The dimmest star in the system, Proxima Centauri (Alpha Centauri C), is the closest star to us (other than our sun).

Alpha Centauri is 4 light-years away from earth. It is astonishing to think that in 1998 a beam of light left Alpha Centauri and has travelled at 186,000 miles a second ever since and is only now arriving at earth.

Alpha centauri is a bright binary star system with the faint red dwarf star Proxima bound to them by gravity.
Beta Centauri known as Hader is also a bright star in the southern sky. It is a first magnitude star.

Alpha Centauri is best known by the name "Rigil Kentaurus", or the Centaur's foot. This is a triple system, three stars which are the closest to our own Sun. Alpha1 and alpha2 Centauri form a noted binary (see below). They are 4.

Alpha Centauri is not a name, but a designation. Astronomers designate stars in each constellation by letters of the Greek alphabet--alpha, beta, gamma, delta and so forth, ...

2. Alpha Centauri is the closest star to the Sun. It is only 1.3 pc away. What size is its parallax shift?
Solution: p = 1/d = 1/1.3 = 0.77"
3. A star has a parallax shift of 6.78 x 10-8 degrees. How far away is the star?

** Alpha Centauri - the star system (three stars) nearest our Sun; approximately 4.3 light years away (63,240 AU/light year). Not visible from the United States except in Hawaii.

The closest is the triple star system Alpha Centauri, which is about 4.4 light years away.

Unfortunately, Alpha Centauri is so far south that it is visible only from latitudes below 25 degrees north.

Centaurus contains the closest star to the Sun, Alpha Centauri, 4.4 light years away. Alpha Centauri is also known as Rigil Kentaurus, from the Arabic meaning ‘centaur's foot'.

As another example, consider the three-dimensional motion of our nearest neighbor, the Alpha Centauri system, sketched in Figure 17.4 in relation to our own solar system.

After the triple system of alpha Centauri Barnard's Star (named after Edward E. Barnard, the discoverer of this star), a red dwarf of 9.5 mag, is the next closest star to us lying in a distance of about 6 light years.

3 light years (or about 40 trillion km/25 trillion mi), is Alpha Centauri C, also known as Proxima Centauri, one of the three stars in the Alpha Centauri system. Alpha Centauri is about 260,000 times farther from the earth than is the sun.

The most notable feature in the constellation is [2040] alpha Centauri, a triple star system composed of a binary star, alpha Centauri AB, and a red dwarf, Proxima Centauri.

For comparison, the Sun's nearest star, Alpha Centauri, is a little over 4 light-years away. So Mizar and Alcor are no more linked than we are to Alpha Centauri.

Beta Centauri (proper name Hadar) is a blue-white super giant and in about 4,000 years, the proper motion of Alpha Centauri will carry it close enough to Beta Centauri that they will appear to be a magnificent double star.

The nearest star - alpha Centauri - which can only be seen from the Southern hemisphere is 4.3 light years away. Most of the brighter stars than can be seen from the Earth are no more than a few hundred light years away.

The star outside of our solar system that is closest to Earth is Alpha Centauri C. It is 40,000,000,000,000 (40 trillion) km away. How many light years is that? 4.

The majority of stars in the galaxy, including our Sun, Sirius and Alpha Centauri A and B are all main sequence stars. The Sun's relative longevity and stability have provided the conditions necessary for life to evolve here on Earth.

Other than that, the closest star is Proxima Centauri, aka Alpha Centauri C (the dimmest star in the Alpha centauri system). Proxima Centauri is about 4.2 light-years from the Sun. It has an absolute magnitude of 15.

that is expanding at the speed of light (the speed of radio transmissions). The leading edges of the bubble correspond with the first artificial radio signals that escaped the Earth's atmosphere. The radio bubble now extends beyond Alpha Centauri.

Each lobe of the Boomerang Nebula is nearly one light-year in length, making the total length of the nebula half as long as the distance from our Sun to our nearest neighbors- the Alpha Centauri stellar system, located roughly 4 light-years away.

Surprisingly, Capella is one of only two conspicuous stars whose combined light is similar to that of the Sun (the other is Alpha Centauri), so appears white on this photograph.
