Alpha Cephei is known as Alderamin ("The Right Shoulder"). In another 5500 years this will become the Pole Star. Beta Cephei is called Alfirk ("The Herd"). This is a visual binary as well as a variable (see below).
[2321] alpha Cephei or Alderamin ("the right shoulder" or "the right arm") is the brightest star in Cepheus. It is an A-type subgiant on its way to becoming a red giant, located near the precessional path of the north celestial pole.
