Lyman Alpha Forest There are clouds of gas between distant quasars and the Earth that absorb ultraviolet light at the wavelength of the Lyman alpha line of hydrogen at a wavelength of 122 nm. Quasars also emit a strong Lyman alpha emission line.
Fornacis (Alpha For) Fornax was named by Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. It was named the Chemical Furnace in honor of Antoine Lavoisier, who was guillotined in the French Revolution in 1794.
The Lyman alpha forest, which allows cosmologists to measure the distribution of neutral atomic hydrogen gas in the early universe, by measuring the absorption of light from distant quasars by the gas.
The Lyman Alpha Forest is shown in the spectrum of the quasar on the bottom. The nearer quasar's light is not absorbed by many intervening gas clouds, so its spectrum doesn't have as many absorption features as the more distant quasar.
The brightest star is [3874] alpha Fornaci, also known as Dalim and Fornacis. It is a binary star notable for its high motion. [3875] beta Fornacis, the second brightest star in the constellation, is a G-type giant.
These clouds absorb light at very specific wavelengths which depend on how distant the clouds are and leave a very well defined spectral signature known as the ‘Lyman alpha forest.
