Alpha Leporis

Astronomy Alpha LeonisAlpha Librae

ARNEB (Alpha Leporis). Orion is so magnificent a constellation that, between the Great Hunter and his ensemble of bright northern winter constellations, we hardly ever look at the rest of his neighborhood.

[4972] alpha Leporis, the brightest star in the constellation, is also known as Arneb ("hare"). It is an old, dying star, either expanding into a supergiant or already past the supergiant stage, 10 times as massive as our Sun.

It lies in the northeastern part (5:46:57.3-14:49:19.0, ICRS 2000.0) of Constellation Lepus, the Hare -- northeast of Arneb (Alpha Leporis) and Nihal (Beta Leporis), west of Eta and Theta Leporis, and southeast of Saiph (Kappa Orionis).

Its brightest star is Alpha Leporis (Arneb), from the Arabic al-arnab meaning 'the hare'.

The constellation's brightest star, third-magnitude Alpha Leporis, is called Arneb, from the Arabic al-arnab meaning ‘the hare'.

NGC 2017 is a group of a half dozen stars, all gravitationally bound (h3780, see above). The "cluster" is found seven arc minutes due east of alpha Leporis.
