RASALHAGUE (Alpha Ophiuchi). Not far from a star with a similar sounding name, Rasalgethi in Hercules, second magnitude (2.08) Rasalhague is the luminary of the relatively dim but very large and intriguing constellation Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer.

The brightest star, alpha Ophiuchi, is better known as Rasalhague, meaning "Head of the Snake Charmer". This is a rather close star, at 54 light years away, and a celestial neighbour of Ras Algethi (alpha Herculis), which lies to the WNW five degrees.

The brightest star in Ophiuchus is second-magnitude Alpha Ophiuchi, called Rasalhague from the Arabic meaning ‘the head of the serpent collector'.

Ophiuchus contains a number of notable stars. The brightest one is [5792] alpha Ophiuchi or Rasalhague ("the head of the serpent collector"), an A-type giant that marks the head of Ophiuchus.
