The brightest star in the constellation Andromeda and the northeastern star of the Square of Pegasus.

ALPHERATZ (Alpha Andromedae). Andromeda runs like a string of pearls to the northeast of the Great Square of Pegasus.

Alpheratz A is a blue B8IVpMnHg subgiant star, peculiar because of the unusual strength of mercury and manganese in its spectrum. The star is 5 times larger than the sun in diameter and 110 times more luminous.

Finding Andromeda: Andromeda is basically the group of stars below Cassiopeia, the main part of the constellation forming an arc stretching nearly 30 degrees across the sky.

" It is also known as Alpheratz or Sirrah, both names derived from the Arabic name "surrat al-faras," meaning 'the navel of the horse.' Because of its location, immediately northeast of the Pegasus constellation, it is also known as delta Pegasi.

The best way to find Andromeda is to first find Pegasus, the winged horse. The Princess' head is the star Alpheratz, which is also the last star in Pegasus. This same star is the base of the "V". Can you find the rest of the constellation?

One of the stars (Alpheratz) is actually now over the boundary into the constellation Andromeda. The other three stars are in Pegasus. All are between 2nd and 3rd magnitude. There are no brighter stars in the square.
