Antecanis

Astronomy Antares maelstromAnthropic principle

Procyon (also called Alpha Canis Minoris, Antecanis, and the Little Dog Star) is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor and the eighth brightest star in the sky. This yellowish star is also part of the Winter Triangle.

The name Procyon was used by the Ancient Greeks, which the Romans translated into Latin equivalent as "Antecanis" or "Before the Dog" because Procyon rises immediately before Sirius, the "Dog Star.

In English the meaning of the Greek roots would be something like "Before (or in Front of?) the Dog." The star was sometimes referred to in Latin as Antecanis, which, according to Allen is equivalent to "Procyon".
