The modern constellation Antlia, the Air Pump, lies up and to the left of bright Suhail (Lambda Velorum, in the constellation Vela), which shines brightly at the lower right hand corner.

Antlia or the "Air Pump" is a small constellation in the southern hemisphere, named by French astronomer Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, who was the first to draw it in the 18th century.

Antlia, the air pump:
This constellation was created between 1750 and 1754 by the French astronomer Nicholas Louis de La Caille.

There is no mythology attached to Antlia as Lacaille discontinued the tradition of giving names from mythology to constellations and instead chose mostly names of instruments used in science.

Lacaille's Antlia
On Lacaille's original 1756 planisphere Antlia was shown as a simple single-cylinder pump for evacuating a glass jar and was named la Machine Pneumatique.

Located near the South Pole, Antlia is a faint constellation that may represent the air pump invented by the English physicist Robert Boyle.

This planetary nebula is found in a rather isolated part of the sky, about six degrees east of psi Velorum, just inside the border with Antlia. The closest bright star is q Velorum (3.85m), two degrees to the southeast.
