The apparent magnitude of a celestial object, such as a star or galaxy, is the brightness measured by an observer at a specific distance from the object.

Apparent magnitude is a term used when refering to a star's brightness as observed from the Earth.The lower the magnitude, the brighter the star.

apparent magnitude (V):
Measure of the brightness of the body seen by the observer. The fainter appears the body, the higher is V.

Apparent Magnitude
the apparent brightness of an object in the sky as it appears to an observer on Earth. Bright objects have a low apparent magnitude while dim objects will have a higher apparent magnitude.

Apparent magnitude is a measure of the brightness of a celestial object as seen from Earth. The lower the number, the brighter the object. Negative numbers indicate extreme brightness.

APPARENT MAGNITUDE - Magnitude determined using the brightness as observed, with no consideration given to how distance is influencing the observation.

The apparent magnitude or apparent brightness of an object is a measure of how bright an object appears to be to an observer. It is the amount of energy from an object in space which reaches a square centimeter of a detector each second.

m = apparent magnitude

The formula use the Log function. This is the base-10 log function. Many calculators also have what's called a Natural Log, usually abbreviated Ln - don't use this.

At an apparent magnitude of 3.5, the Andromeda Galaxy is notable for being one of the brightest Messier objects, making it easily visible to the naked eye even when viewed from areas with moderate light pollution.

Calculating the apparent magnitude
Students are first asked to think of a way to determine the apparent magnitude.

Lying about 7500 light years away and covering about 20 square light years, this cluster contains over 100 stars and has an apparent magnitude of about 4.2.

The brightest stars have the longest period, so distance can be estimated by measuring the period and the apparent magnitude of a star. And these stars are bright, so the method can be extended to nearby galaxies.

The energy produced by stars radiates into space as electromagnetic radiation (mostly visible light), and as a stream of neutrinos. The apparent brightness of a star is measured by its apparent magnitude.
