ASELLUS BOREALIS (Gamma Cancri). The lore of the sky is not monolithic, but cuts amazingly across time and cultures.

 


Two stars in the constellation are named Asellus Borealis and Asellus Australis, Latin names meaning the ‘northern ass' and ‘southern ass', and they have their own legend.

Their names are Asellus Borealis and Asellus Australis, meaning the "Northern & Southern Donkeys." The northern donkey is the star at top. The ancient name for this cluster, Praesepe, means "manger" or "crib." ...

[1213] gamma Cancri or Asellus Borealis ("northern donkey colt") is a magnitude 4.6 white A-type subgiant about 158 light-years distant from Earth.

The head of the crab contains two stars named Asellus Borealis and Asellus Australis, whose names mean Northern and Southern Ass. These stars were believed to be the two asses that Dionysus and Silenus rode on during the battle against the Titans.
