Asteroids: the rocky debris of space
Asteroids, though neglected scientifically and publicly for a long time, have been the subject of much interest and debate over the past fifteen years.

Asteroids are pieces of metallic rock floating in space. Many asteroids are found in the the space between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter. This space is known as the 'asteroid belt'.

Asteroids range in size from tiny pebbles to about 578 miles (930 kilometers) in diameter (Ceres). Sixteen of the 3,000 known asteroids are over 150 miles (240 km) in diameter. Some asteroids even have orbiting moons.
CERES: THE LARGEST ASTEROID ...
Asteroids range in size from dust particles to many miles across. Most current theories hold that asteroids are bits and pieces left over from the formation of the solar system.
Asteroids are rocky and metallic objects too small to be considered planets. They are sometimes called minor planets. They range in size from Ceres, with a diameter of about 1000 km, down to a few centimeters or less.
Asteroids are left over materials from the formation of the Solar System. These materials were never incorporated into a planet because of their proximity to Jupiter's strong gravity.

This is a list of numbered minor planets, nearly all of them asteroids, in sequential order.As of July 2006 there are 129,436 numbered minor planets, and many more not yet numbered.
